While en-route to Charleston, SC, to celebrate the 26th anniversary of our first date (Nov 11th), Rich and I found ourselves on I-26 absolutely famished and still nearly two hours from our destination. We stopped at Columbia, SC, and were lucky to discover Lamb’s Bread Vegan Café, an animal free, organic, NON-GMO restaurant right off I-26 on Main Street!  You’ll know you are at the right place when you see their street sign with the name of their restaurant followed by “Love is the Key.” What a perfect preamble to enjoying a healthy meal!

Love is the Key!

Lamb’s Bread Vegan Café is a delightfully colorful establishment, decorated in an African motif of masks, drums and other nods to the proprietor’s African roots. Numerous small booths and tables allow for plenty of seating. We arrived at three in the afternoon, which explains the dearth of customers at that hour. The owner, Folami (who is terribly camera shy) bought the restaurant from her father, who owned it for many years. Folami does all the cooking herself. The food might be best described as “Vegan soul food” though those of us who were born and bred in the deep South may prefer to think of it simply as “good food.”  “The name, Lamb’s Bread, suggests it is the bread of the people, serving food which nourishes the mind, body and soul,” says Folami.

Lamb’s Bread Vegan Café is a family run establishment. We were served by Henrietta, a lovely woman wearing long braids and a vivid bright red costume. Henrietta is Folami’s mother. Folami’s son, Jaki, who is twelve, also helps out when not in school.

As I’ve mentioned in past reviews, I’m not a big fan of fake meat. However, Folami makes a vegan Orange Chicken that is out of this world! Rich ordered the Orange Chicken over brown rice which comes with your choice of 2 or 3 sides. He chose the large option with mac and cheese, kale and roasted potatoes.

I ordered the plate of side vegetables which comes with six large servings on a big plate. My plate included kale, collards, purple cabbage, roasted potatoes, baby lima beans and mac and cheese. I was craving greens and beans. This meal certainly satisfied my need for some good old antioxidants!  The flavor of the kale was interesting. It had a layer of sweetness to it which set it apart from other kale dishes I’ve tried in the past. Juxtaposed against the slightly bitter flavor of collards, they complimented one another beautifully. The lima beans were cooked to perfection and the roasted potatoes were extraordinary. In the purple cabbage I also tasted a hint of sweetness and the mac and cheese tasted like the real thing.   I regretted not ordering the Orange Chicken, it was so good, but Rich was kind enough to share. The servings were huge and I’m almost ashamed to admit I ate every bite.

The proteins are customarily soy based. Another option this day was BBQ spare ribs. The proteins and the sides are likely to change daily. They are prepared from organic and/or locally resourced produce and NO GMOs!!  YES!!!

At lunch, the small plate is $9. The large is $11. Extra sides are $5 each. At dinner, the small plate is $11, the large $13. Lamb’s Bread Vegan Café also serves sandwiches, all of which are $9, with sides $12. The options today were vegan BLT, vegan chicken salad sandwich, tempeh reuben, vegan Philly cheesesteak and a tofu sandwich.

The Piece de Résistance had to be the decadently sweet muffins, ($5). A variety sits atop a covered serving plate on the counter. They are as colorful as they are flavorful. Be careful. You are likely to go into a diabetic coma if you finish a whole one. I took a couple of bites of a toasted coconut muffin and let Rich polish it off. He weighs 135 pounds soaking wet so he can afford the calories. What the heck, we’re celebrating!

Fresh beverages include a watermelon-ginger splash, pineapple lemon ginger and raspberry limeade. ($2.50) If you find yourself traveling I-26 and want to imbibe on good, whole foods served with kindness, courtesy and soul, give Lamb’s Bread Vegan Café a try. You’ll be glad you did.
