When Uncanny Kitchen of Abingdon, VA first opened in early summer they set the bar  for being the only vegetarian, mostly vegan, restaurant in the area using quality organic, locally grown produce. Uncanny Kitchen goes the extra mile in serving only GMO Free edibles! This restaurant is a new and very welcome addition to the casual dining scene in Abingdon, VA. The name refers to the concept that everything is made from scratch. Nothing owner David Basinger makes comes from a can.

Uncanny Kitchen is the only restaurant in Abingdon Rich and I frequent because it is the only restaurant in town where we can be assured of a healthy, plant-based meal. The restaurant is small and the dining room is tiny, with only four tables.  It was originally envisioned as more a take-out kind of restaurant and the number of clientele who have opted to eat in came as a bit of a surprise to the owner.  Still, even considering the steady stream of traffic in and out of the restaurant, I’ve never had to wait for a table.

The menu is around 95% vegan. With some of the gluten-free items, there may be some egg. Just ask and they’ll tell you which items are not vegan. Rich and I’ve had much of what is offered but there are still items on the menu we’ve yet to try. We’ve had the barbecue sandwich, the meatball sub, the mock tuna and mock chicken salad sandwiches, the veggie wrap, the cornbread salad, the Hoppin’ John hummus sandwich and the chocolate cake and the chocolate doughnuts. There is nothing I wouldn’t order again, …and again!

David makes all his own breads and they are a perfect consistency and weight to handle the sandwich fillings. He also makes breads to order, rustic sourdough boules, a whole wheat loaf, New York-style rye, white sandwich bread, and San Francisco-style sourdough, all at $5.99 each. All of the breads require a one day lead time except for the San Francisco-style sourdough which requires two days notice as the leavening process takes longer with this bread.

The menu prices for sandwiches range from $6 to $7 and their various hummus dishes with flatbread are $6.25. The house salad as a main dish is $6 and as a side is $3.50. Other sides are $2. Daily specials are a treat and have become something we look forward to.  The desserts are likely to change daily. David and Lisa are still tweaking the menu and will be adding items as they develop a demand for them and as seasonal produce changes.
