It’s no secret that Southern California is a mecca for healthy living including a wide variety of healthy eating options. With sun year round, the locals can enjoy outdoor activities and fitness, and fuel that lifestyle with access to fresh local food. Got special dietary requirements or allergies?
No problem, you can easily find a restaurant or market to pick up your vegan, soy free, dairy free, gluten free, grain free, or nut free diet choice. The raw food vegan diet covers a wide variety of restrictions, therefore, a safe bet for most diets. Sadly, I have seen a few raw food restaurants come and go over the last 5 years. Thankfully, one that has stayed and expanded is 118 degrees.
Chef Jenny Ross first opened 118 Degrees in Costa Mesa at The Camp. Not a place kids go to roast marshmallows, but an outdoor, green certified spot that offers wellness and personal styling services, unique and purposeful shopping as well as healthy local and international dining. Basically you can hit up some yoga then grab a bite, buy a new snowboard, and check out some cool threads all in the same zone. The perfect location for Jenny to open a health-conscious restaurant and offer good food to the masses of healthy hip folks in the Orange County area.
Everything on the menu is 100% plant based, prepared daily using local organic produce when possible and if needed there are some dishes that can be adjusted to met food sensitivities. Some dishes are made with Kamut, although low in Gluten if you are sensitive you may want to avoid. Everything is clearly marked in the menu including nut free options, so it is easy to avoid anything that contains a food sensitive ingredient.
Perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner there is plenty to choose from to satisfy whatever you’re craving. Start off with one of their healthy fresh presses juices or if you are in a hurry get a smoothie to go. I highly recommend the Super Green or if you are raving more of a sweet rich smoothie the Chocolate Supreme hits the spot.
What I really love is that there is nothing fake in this restaurant, even if you order a familiar cooked food item. They do a really great job of mimicking the taste and texture of traditional foods like their tostado’s, that have a crispy crunch to the shell and you would really think the avocados were fried but the big difference is they just burst with flavor instead of oil.
One of my favorite dishes are the Portobello Tacos. Mushrooms are a much healthier and more nutritious meat substitute then soy meat. I do think some of their entree sizes are kind of small and I usually need to get a smoothie or small appetizer/side salad to be full. If you are looking to get stuffed, though, the CA Panini with it’s marinated veggies and rich pesto sauce hits the spot!
The look and decor of the restaurant is sophisticated but with a minimal and natural vibe. The staff are all very kind, outgoing and helpful. For those that live in the area they also do catering, meal programs and detox programs. Give this restaurant a try and I know you will be back for more!
